About the Recipe

GMOs | Good or Bad?
Although GMO foods (Genetically Modified Organisms) aren't always negative or should be avoided, it's important to understand why certain organisms are genetically modified and what that means for our health. Some genetically modified crops were designed to be drought-resistant that would require that specific crop to utilize less water and fertilizer to grow and thrive in less than ideal environments.

GMO Corn, Glyphosate, and Your Health:
There are other organisms like CORN that are genetically modified to resist the harmful herbicides and pesticides that kill unwanted weeds and insects. Nearly all corn grown in the United States (more than 150 million acres) is genetically modified to resist the detrimental and DNA crop damaging effects of Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup, as well as Atrazine. However, that doesn’t mean that humans aren’t resistant to these harmful chemicals.

Glyphosate, Round Up, and Atrazine are endocrine disrupting chemicals that can become harmful to human health with increased risk for reproductive harm/toxicity, infertility, certain cancers (particularly with potential links to breast cancers and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma), liver disease, Parkinson’s Disease, diminished neurological function, and allergies. New research as of 2023 has shown that childhood exposure to Glyphosate was linked to liver inflammation and metabolic disorders in early adulthood, potentially leading to liver cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease later in life.

And not to mention, just because a crop is labeled “non-GMO” that doesn’t mean it’s not sprayed with Glyphosate, Round Up, or Atrazine. To ensure that your corn isn’t sprayed with these particular synthetic fertilizers or synthetic pesticides, make sure to buy organic when possible or if accessible.

Microwave Popcorn and Forever Chemicals:
We all love the convenience of microwave popcorn here and there, but what if I told you that stove top popped corn takes only 2 minutes as well, but without the harmful chemicals inside a bag of microwave popcorn?

Research has found that people who consumed microwave popcorn every day over the course of a year had levels of PFAS (forever chemicals and endocrine disruptors) that were up to 63% higher than average.

Ingredients

  • Avocado oil

  • 2/3rd cup organic popcorn kernels (I prefer Lesser Evil brand)

  • 2-3 tbsp melted grass-fed salted butter

  • Sea salt

Preparation

Step 1

You're going to need a large pot with a lid! I use my Staub cast iron 7 qt. cocette.

Heat your pot over low-medium heat.

Then, drizzle just enough avocado oil to cover the bottom of the pot. (I prefer using avocado oil for popping popcorn as oppoosed to olive oil or butter because it has a higher smoke point; so as the oil heats it won't burn your popcorn)

Step 2

Add just 3 corn kernels to the heated oil and shake occasionally until they pop. Once they pop, then you know the oil is ready to add the rest of your corn kernels!

Increase the heat from low-medium heat to MEDIUM heat. Add 2/3rd cup corn kernels to your pot and cover with the lid. Shake your pot while the kernels are popping. Keep shaking the pot so that the kernels don't burn. When you stop hearing kernels pop, then you can remove the lid.

Step 3

Remove the pot from the heat. Sprinkle the popcorn with a pinch of salt and stir. Next, melt 2-3 tbsp of grass-fed butter and then drizzle it over the popcorn. Stir and add more salt as desired.

Step 4

Have a bowl of my Better Than Movie Theatre Popcorn, prop your feet up, grab an ice cold Olipop soda and turn on your favorite movie in the comfort of your own home! Get cozy!
